Revamped geometry, a pound lighter, and easier on the wallet. What's not to like?
Big mountain, all mountain, up mountain, down mountain, cross mountain...calling ALL mountain bike riders, your ride is here! The never-ending saga to create the best do-it-all bike continues, and Intense has stepped up with the Uzzi VP. From enduro epics to Whistler downhilling, the Uzzi is up to the challenge, ready to take on anything and everything in its path.
In 2012, the Uzzi was updated with a whole slew of upgrades, including a direc-mount front derailleur tab, a hydroformed downtube, added rear swingarm bracing for stiffness, an added 12x142mm dropout option, and lowered/slackened geometry. For 2013, the Uzzi remains unchanged. It is still the king of do-it-all bikes, and we'd be hard pressed to come up with any changes to make on this amazing bike.
Being the jack of all trades, it comes as no surprise that the Uzzi's geometry and travel is fully adjustable. The G3 dropout system gives you three main settings, adjusting head angle, BB height, and chainstay length. The G3 dropouts are available in 10x135mm, 12x150mm, as well as 12x142mm for this year. Like things slack and low? Swing the dropouts into the rear set of mounting holes, bolt them up, and hit the nearest DH track. The mid and high settings are better for general all-mountain and pedal intensive riding. Same goes for the travel settings. Downhillers will love the plushness of the 165mm (6.5”) setting, while those seeking a firmer ride will prefer the 150mm (6.0”) setting.
There are a multitude of rear shocks that will suit the Uzzi. For 2013, Intense is offering three stock options: Fox Van RC, Cane Creek Double Barrel, and Cane Creek Double Barrel Air. The Van RC is a great budget-level rear shock, offering rebound and compression adjustments. Those seeking greater adjustability and increased performance will want to consider one of the Cane Creek shocks. The CCDB Air is inevitably the lightest option, and Cane Creek claims performance is on par with the CCDB coil. It does require more routine maintenance than the coil, which may factor into your decision. Either way, the Uzzi's full potential will be unleashed the moment you bolt on one of these CCDB shocks.
Intense understands that there are numerous drivetrain options for this style of bike, so they fitted the frame with a fully CNC'd 73mm BB/ISCG '05 unit. 1x10, 2x10, 3x10, and Hammerschmidt drivetrains are all a breeze to setup with just about any chainguide or front derailleur. A direct mount tab takes the guess-work out of front derailleur fitment, and makes the frame fully compatible with Shimano and SRAM direct mount front derailleurs. The frame is also equipped with dropper post cable routing for those looking to use a height-adjustable seatpost.
The Uzzi frame with the CCDB Air weighs in at about 8.5 lbs. Complete builds tend to be between 32 – 36 lbs. Sub-30 lb can be achieved with a more generous budget. 32 lbs is a respectable weight for such a versatile bike though, and with the excellent capabilities of VPP suspension, the bike pedals up hill with very little effort.
As with the rest of Intense's bikes, the Uzzi utilizes their latest bearing and pivot axle system. The lower pivot uses two alloy oversized main axles with expander cones to insure tightness. Bearing maintenance is a breeze since the frame is equipped with grease ports. Regular maintenance will result in excellent bearing longevity.
The 2013 Uzzi X9 Complete bike starts at $4499 with the X9 10-speed kit, Fox Van 180 FIT RC2 Kashima fork, and a Fox Van RC rear shock. View full build details using the Specifications tab above.
